Meet Virginia La Torre Jeker, J.D. International US Tax

With 40 years of US tax and international experience, Virginia has been a member of the NYS Bar since 1984.   She is admitted to practice before the United States Tax Court.  Virginia’s tax experience has spanned Asia and the Middle East since 1986.  Married to a foreign national and living abroad, Virginia’s blogging has sought to educate persons in similar situations.  As reflected in her writings, Virginia appreciates the sensitive and special situations involved in multi-national families and in which US persons abroad often find themselves.  She is a contributor on Forbes and provides expert insight into the latest changes in American tax laws; her articles and tax blog posts outline the US tax obligations of American expats and foreign persons having any US connections.

Virginia’s knowledge is in the areas of cross-border transactions, FATCA, expatriation and numerous other areas of US international tax.  Virginia is highly knowledgeable and reliable with a network of tax and attorney colleagues across the globe who provide regular input and solve cross-border and multi-jurisdictional tax matters.  Virginia has developed a unique specialty in analyzing the US tax consequences of transactions involving Sharia law.

Living in Asia, Virginia worked as a US tax consultant for international law firms, major banks (including HSBC) international accounting firms (Deloitte) and trust companies. Early in her career she worked in New York with the top-tier law firm, Willkie Farr & Gallagher.

Virginia is an avid tax blogger for many years. Her Twitter (X) Account @VLJeker has been listed in Forbes, Top 100 Must-Follow Tax Twitter Accounts and she has been named by Bloomberg Tax as a tax professional to follow on LinkedIn.  Virginia is a contributor on Forbes covering US tax laws impacting overseas Americans and foreign nationals with any US connections.  She regularly provides continuing professional education through seminars and mentoring.

In June 2020, Tax Notes International recognized Virginia as a preeminent US tax professional (it can be accessed here).   Virginia is a strong source of encouragement for young professionals, especially women who more keenly face the challenge of balancing family life with career.   On these issues there is a short podcast posted in Forbes.

Virginia has been quoted in the New York TimesNewsweek and the Wall Street Journal and is regularly quoted in many local news articles and publications. She has been interviewed by CNN and has been invited for local television appearances. She is regularly asked to speak at numerous conferences and seminars and has published a vast array of scholarly works on US tax issues, some of which have been referenced by other attorneys or organizations both to the US courts and US Congress.

VISA MIDDLE EAST (video here) recognized Virginia as an influential voice in the region.  Virginia was chosen, in part, because of her capacity to appreciate cultural differences and  efforts to raise awareness in her profession to understand the critical interplay of US tax and Sharia laws.

She is also an accomplished author having published 3 children’s books while living in Hong Kong.
